EXPLORING THE ICONIC JOURNEY OF MR. MOHAN KAVRIE
I could be said to be one of the first persons to be in the field of the nonwovens, which is a big part of Technical textiles as you know. I say one of the first because actually nonwovens started in India in the early Sixties, and of course today, he no longer is addressed as the father of nonwovens. He has become the grandfather of nonwovens, which was the one, Tushar Lalkaka.
He was the person to set up the nonwoven unit of Tata Mills. It was the first in the early sixties. And after that precious little that happened up till the second half of Eighties when we started. I was fortunate that I got an exposure to a nonwoven unit in Jaipur in 1979.
INNOVATION IS THE KEY TO THE TECHNICAL TEXTILE INDUSTRY
As far as innovations are concerned, this happens continuously. These innovations that happen, people don’t necessarily notice it. When you are starting from zero obviously lot of developments have taken place on a continuous basis and it becomes very difficult to say which innovation is what made the rare breakthrough because there is no end to it. They are small steps. Everything, for example, that we have done from the day we started has been innovation
THE BEST PART OF BEING IN THE INDUSTRY
What I really like about our industry is that each day is a different day. We are trying to do something new, everyone is a partner in what you do. So it gives great satisfaction that you work with somebody, you develop something to meet its specific requirements.
FINDING THE NICHE IS KEY TO WINNING
See my winning mantra is being focused on what we are doing, and not really trying to copy what others are doing. You have to try to do something different. You have each person who has to find his own niche place. In Technical Textile there is a possibility only for those who are able to find their niche area.
COMPOSITES WILL PLAY A BIG ROLE IN SMART CITIES
Composites is going to play a great role when the smart cities come. Because the way our buildings are constructed, materials are going to change. They are going to be lighter, stronger. They are also have to be able to give different shapes, because architecture is also becoming very important. We are no longer building city- buildings the way we used to do before.
FINDING OUT NEW STRATEGIC WAYS TO USE NONWOVENS
Nonwovens is already used in many composite applications and will continue to be useful. But we definitely are keen to find some strategic areas of nonwoven applications that we would like to, I mean exploit.
COLLABORATING WITH TECHTEXTIL INDIA 2019
Our growth has been driven to a large extent by the growth of the auto industry. So as far as that growth is concerned we definitely are happy. But we are not satisfied with the growth that has happened with all the other applications of nonwovens because we believe a lot can be done. So we will be focussing more on nonwoven applications in other non-automotive areas. It so happens that we have not had the good fortune of participating in Techtextil India so far. It doesn’t mean anything. However I am aware that Techtextil India definitely brings greater opportunities for the people from the industry to know about what is happening, meet the right people and by associating with Techtextil India I am sure the industry can benefit, so we have decided this year we will participate.
